Joint Statement of the European University Alliance EULiST – European University on the Situation at Harvard University

25/04/2025

As representatives of the Governing Board of the European University Alliance EULiST – European University, we express our concern regarding the current developments surrounding Harvard University. We stand in full support of Harvard’s governance in its efforts to defend the independence of academia and academic freedom in the face of political pressure linked to financial restrictions imposed by the federal government of the United States.

Universities, whether public or private, are essential bearers of democratic values, manifested above all in free thought, open inquiry, and autonomous governance. Critical dialogue and diversity of opinion are natural and necessary principles of academic life. We therefore view political interference in academia — including through economic constraints — as a violation of these foundational principles.

International cooperation is an essential functional principle of the university environment. Therefore, with this statement, we express our solidarity with the governance of Harvard University and its entire academic community in rejecting proposals whose adoption would violate the principles on which universities have historically been built.

On behalf of EULiST – European Universities and by decision of the Alliance Board, composed of the rectors and presidents of ten European universities, the Chair of the Management Board, and the Chair of the Student Board – LUH Hannover, TUW Vienna, STU Bratislava, BUT Brno, URJC Madrid, NTUA Athens, UnivAQ Aquila, IMT Paris, JU Jönköpping, LUT Lappeenranta-Lahti.

Make Yourself Heard: The Power of Presence in Presentations, On-Site Workshop at TUW, 12 and 13 June 2025

17/04/2025

The TU Wien DOC School cordially invites the EULiST PhD students to attend the 2-day Workshop “Make Yourself Heard: The Power of Presence in Presentations” to be held in-person:

TU Wien / Resselgasse 4, Vortragsraum Bibliothek (DD05B04) 12.06.25, 09:00 17:00
TU Wien / Resselgasse 4, Vortragsraum Bibliothek (DD05B04) 13.06.25, 09:00 17:00

When you’re speaking in front of people do you capture and hold their attention? Do you instill confidence by what you say and how you say it? In an environment where it is becoming ever more important to convey trustworthiness, competence, and authenticity, presence training has become an essential tool in professional development.

This two-day workshop is designed to help academic professionals align their body language with their purpose and intentions in the present moment in order to create an effective and powerful presence.
It is designed to reach the target aims through meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater exercises, other exercises informed by Amy Cuddy’s work on presence.

In order to apply the principles taught in a pragmatic way, all participants are required to have a 2-3 minute self-presentation prepared and ready to use.

We have 5 places available at the moment.

Enrolled PhD students from the EULiST partner Universities can sign up for the workshop by e-mail to tuwdoc@tuwien.ac.at and with a copy of their PhD enrollment at their respective Universities.

Please note that TUW only covers the coffee breaks and lunch. Travel and accommodation expenses are NOT covered by TUW.

EULiST General Assembly 2025 at UnivAQ in L’ Aquila

14/04/2025

The annual EULiST General Assembly 2025 was successfully hosted by the University of L’ Aquila (UnivAQ) from March 31 to April 2, 2025, in the historic “Luigi Zordan” Congress Centre at the monastery of St. Basil, in the heart of L’ Aquila, Italy.

The event welcomed over 150 participants from the 10 partner universities. Academic leaders, including rectors, presidents, and vice-rectos, as well as professors, researchers, administrative staff, students, and other representatives from EULiST partner universities convened for this annual gathering to reflect on achievements to date and to define the next strategic steps.

The main topics discussed during the three-day General Assembly included:

  • Strategies for student and staff mobility in EULiST
  • Sustainable EULiST Campuses
  • STEM Education for Competitiveness
  • EULiST Digital Campus
  • EULiST Internship Platform
  • Internal and external communication in EULiST
  • Managing the European University Alliances – EU Challenges
  • European Degree and Label
  • EULiST Quality Assurance System
  • Upcoming events: EULiST Global Conference and Student Conference

Throughout the Assembly, a series of parallel meetings took place, including sessions of the Governing Board, Management Board, Student Board, Coordination Office, and the Project Steering Committee. On the final day, several parallel WP/TG meetings were also held. In particular, WP2, WP3, WP4, TG1.3, and TG1.4 met to assess the current progress of their respective activities and to collaboratively outline the roadmap for the upcoming months.

One of the most significant moments of the event was the inauguration of the 2024/25 academic year at the University of L’Aquila (UnivAQ). This occasion served as a meaningful gathering of Italian universities, represented by guest rectors, alongside delegates from all EULiST partner institutions— underscoring the shared commitment of the EULiST member universities to fostering a strong and interconnected academic community.

Furthermore, the General Assembly hosted the first session in a new series of webinars dedicated to the professional development of academic staff, an initiative promoted within the EULiST Alliance. Coordinated by Task Group 3.2 “Innovative Teaching and Learning Methodologies”, the series aims to provide academic staff with innovative tools and advanced strategies to enhance teaching and learning. The inaugural webinar, titled “Challenge-based Learning: An Active Pedagogy in Higher Education,” was led by Prof. Claudia Migliaccio of the Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), Paris.

The EULiST General Assembly 2025 marked another important milestone in the Alliance’s journey, reinforcing the collective efforts of its member universities toward shaping an inclusive, innovative, and future-oriented European Higher Education Area.
