EULiST is Strengthening its European Footprint: Welcoming the University of Stuttgart as a Cooperation Partner

The EULiST Alliance is proud to announce a significant milestone in its expansion and strategic development. The University of Stuttgart has officially joined our community as a Cooperation Partner, paving the way for a deeper integration within the “European Universities” initiative.

 

A Shared Vision: Society and Technology

The addition of the University of Stuttgart is a natural evolution for EULiST. As one of Germany’s leading technically oriented universities, Stuttgart is renowned for its “Stuttgart Way” – a unique interdisciplinary approach that integrates engineering and natural sciences with the humanities and social sciences.

This philosophy directly mirrors the EULiST mission: linking society and technology to drive the green and digital transitions while strengthening social cohesion across Europe.

Building a Strategic Bridge to 2027 and Beyond

While the current EULiST project framework serves its ten founding members until the end of 2027, the Alliance is firmly focused on long-term sustainability. The inclusion of the University of Stuttgart as a Cooperation Partner acts as a strategic bridge:

  • Integration: Stuttgart will actively participate in the Alliance’s governing bodies in an observer capacity.
  • Co-creation: The partnership formalizes a collaborative path for future grant applications and joint initiatives under the European Commission’s forthcoming calls.
  • Excellence: The Alliance gains world-class expertise in research, innovation, and industry collaboration from one of Europe’s most vibrant industrial hubs.

URJC Hosts EULiST WP5 Meeting

The EULiST Alliance continues to strengthen its collaborative ties. On 27–28 April, representatives from partner universities gathered at Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) for a WP5 meeting focused on research, innovation, and science outreach.

The two-day event served as a dynamic platform to review milestones and align strategic actions that will define the alliance’s outreach agenda in the coming years.

 

Strategic Milestones on the Horizon

A major highlight of the discussions was the preparation for upcoming flagship events that will bridge the gap between academia and society:

  • EULiST Interactive Conference “Make Science Matter” (Brussels, 2026): Set to be a major annual milestone, this event will engage external stakeholders and amplify EULiST’s impact beyond the university walls.
  • II Global Conference (Athens, 2027): Planning is already underway to bring global perspectives to our initiatives.
  • Final EULiST Interactive Conference (URJC, October 2027): A culminating multi-player event designed to showcase the results of all alliance projects.

Innovation, Open Science, and Synergy

Participants delved into the progress of various tasks, including the development of new European project proposals and workshops dedicated to science communication.

The meeting also underscored the importance of cross-cutting collaboration within the alliance, highlighting synergies such as:

  • The Citizen Science Office (CSO)
  • The upcoming Matchmaking Event at URJC (1–2 October 2026).
  • Future Summer Schools aimed at fostering deeper student and researcher engagement.

First-hand Look at URJC Infrastructure

Beyond the boardroom, the partners had the opportunity to visit the Móstoles campus. The tour included state-of-the-art audiovisual production facilities, robotics and computer laboratories, and modern teaching spaces, providing a first-hand look at the high-level infrastructure URJC brings to the alliance.

The EULiST BIP “Point Clouds for Society: Cultural Heritage, Infrastructure, and Environment” successfully completed

The EULiST BIP: “Point Clouds for Society: Cultural Heritage, Infrastructure, and Environment” was hosted by the School of Rural, Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering, NTUA, within the framework of the EULiST Alliance, under the scientific coordination of Professor Efi Dimopoulou.

For one week, more than 30 students and academics from five EULiST partner universities collaborated in a dynamic environment of learning and knowledge exchange, combining theory, fieldwork and data processing focused on the generation and applications of 3D point clouds in cultural heritage and the environment.

The program included team-based fieldwork at the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kynigos, followed by supporting lectures, hands-on activities and final presentations at the School of RSGE NTUA, offering participants meaningful international and interdisciplinary experience in innovative methods and cutting-edge tools. The BIP demonstrated in practice the strength of European collaboration in education and research, fostering connections among students and academic communities while creating fertile ground for new ideas and future collaborations.

The program concluded with a cultural guided tour on Sunday, 26 April, led by Associate Professor Eleftheria Tsakanika of the School of Architecture, NTUA, offering participants an additional opportunity to engage in the cultural wealth of Athens and to experience firsthand the connection between technological education and cultural heritage. A week of knowledge, field exploration, collaboration and international exchange has come to an end, leaving a strong footprint and opening new European horizons.

We warmly thank all participating students, the instructors from the co-organizing universities in Vienna and Bratislava, as well as the faculty of the School of Rural, Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering at NTUA who organized the BIP, Assistant Professors George Piniotis and Konstantinos Nikolitas of the Geodesy Laboratory, Dr. Styliani Verykokou, Adjunct Lecturer, Regina Chliverou, Laboratory Teaching Staff of the Photogrammetry Laboratory, and the EULiST NTUA Office, especially Melina Giannakopoulou for their valuable contribution to the success of the program.

The key deliverables of this BIP go beyond enhancing students’ technical skills, including the preparation of a publication presenting the 3D geometric documentation of the catholicon of the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kynigos, which served as the fieldwork site.

Towards Deeper Integration: EULiST General Assembly 2026 in Lappeenranta

The countdown to our most important milestone of the year has begun. This May, the EULiST Alliance heads to Lappeenranta, Finland, as LUT University hosts our 2026 General Assembly.

From Collaboration to Deep Integration

The 2026 General Assembly signifies EULiST’s transition into a phase of deeper integration and stronger operational maturity. As the alliance evolves, the sessions will focus on moving beyond cooperation toward a more unified European University entity.

The program is designed to turn strategy into action, featuring high-level discussions on:

  • Trust and Organizational Culture: Strengthening the social and professional bonds that define our alliance.
  • Impact Pathways: Showcasing concrete results from joint activities in education, research, and innovation.
  • Strategic Alignment: Focusing on the EU project’s mid-term review, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and new strategic initiatives.

A Unified Effort

Over the course of three days, participants representing diverse EULiST governing bodies and units will meet in parallel working groups to drive the alliance’s mission forward. Beyond the formal sessions, the assembly offers opportunities for networking and an introduction to Finnish culture, further fostering the social cohesion that is central to the EULiST identity.

EULiST remains committed to connecting society and technology, driving the green and digital transitions, and building trust in science across Europe.

LUT Delegation Visits NTUA to Advance Strategic Collaboration

A delegation from LUT University visited the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) on March 31 – April 1, 2026, with the aim of strengthening collaboration in education, research, innovation across key engineering fields and the sharing of best practices.

The LUT delegation consisted of two distinct groups, reflecting complementary strategic priorities:

  • LUT School of Energy Systems, and in particular Civil Engineering, which is currently under development and shaping its academic portfolio to incorporate digitalization, infrastructures and resilience in engineering education.
  • LUT School of Engineering Science, and in particular Separation Science, focusing on the development of new joint educational collaborations, including double degree programs, capacity building projects and Blended Intensive Programs.

During the two-day visit, meetings and presentations and laboratory visits were held with faculty members from multiple NTUA Schools, which contributed to mapping complementary expertise between the two institutions and defining next steps toward a long-term strategic partnership. The delegations visited the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Chemical Engineering,

The delegation visits at the NTUA School of Civil Engineering, in particular, included discussions that focused on both the key laboratory infrastructure and the new degrees’ curriculum of the under development LUT Department of Civil Engineering. Both Faculties agreed that Civil Engineering education builds the foundations for tomorrow’s sustainable and competitive communities. The advanced expertise and infrastructure of the NTUA Institute for Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure focuses on the integration of advanced technologies and methodologies to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability, security and resilience. In addition, the NTUA Integrated Master – Diploma of Civil Engineering ensures that graduates can use a scientific approach to solve global challenges and are equipped with skills and strengths to manage heightened demands on resilient built environment.

The central outcome of the visit was the identification of concrete opportunities for future collaboration: teaching co-organization of BIPs and EULiST courses, laboratory infrastructure collaboration in soil mechanics, educational collaboration in natural hazards, research funding collaboration, early career-researchers mobility.

EULiST Workshop in Brno: Advancing the Roadmap for European Education

Strong alliances build stronger universities and create better opportunities for students across Europe. Embracing this spirit, the EULiST Alliance gathered approximately 40 colleagues for the Work Package 3 (WP3) Workshop, hosted by Brno University of Technology (BUT) on March 2 -3. The meeting reaffirmed that collaboration within the Alliance leads to concrete steps toward higher-quality and more accessible European education.

Strategic Vision and Common Values

Participants, joining both in person and online, explored the roadmap for 2026+, quality assurance initiatives, and strategic steps toward a European Joint Degree. Throughout the discussions, the Alliance reaffirmed its core values of equality, inclusiveness, diversity, and academic freedom.

“The workshop gave us a chance to design common solutions for excellent and more accessible education, strengthen support for students, increase the quality of study opportunities, and explore a common path towards the European Joint Degree,” reflected Tomáš Katrňák from BUT, leader of Task 3.5.

Synergy Across Work Packages

Alessandra Continenza from the University of L’Aquila, Leader of WP3, emphasized the importance of bringing together experts active in different tasks and work packages.

“Representatives debated overarching issues connecting the many activities within EULiST in a warm, comfortable, and collaborative atmosphere,” she commented, adding that the outcomes will guide the next actions to further strengthen the Alliance.

This notion was confirmed by Vítězslav Máša, Vice-Rector for Education and Quality at the host institution (BUT),  who would like to see the opportunities transformed into visible and tangible benefits. “Discussions during the workshop confirmed that the EULiST alliance has a strong team of active and experienced professionals in teaching and learning. I also appreciate the excellent preparation of the entire EULiST WP3 group meeting and thank my colleagues from BUT for their strong support during the event,” the vice-rector highlighted.

Building Stronger Connections

The EULiST Alliance sincerely thanks all participants for their active engagement and contribution to building stronger connections between our member universities. We look forward to seeing these collaborations grow and transform into tangible benefits for our students and staff in the coming months.

More than 270 funded mobility opportunities are available for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in 2026 within the EULiST European University Alliance. These opportunities support short-term research visits (1-3 months) and internships.

Early Career Researchers engaged in academic or professional collaboration with EULiST member institutions are invited to apply for a short-term research internship taking place until December 2026.

URJC presents the current status of the EULiST Alliance and its upcoming challenges at an internal information session

The Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) held the EULiST Update Meeting on March 5 with the aim of sharing with the university community involved in the project the progress achieved by the EULiST Alliance (European Universities Linking Society and Technology), as well as the main milestones and challenges that will shape its development in the coming years.

The meeting brought together the institutional and technical teams involved in the different tasks of the European project, providing an overview of the current status of the alliance and the areas of work in which URJC is actively contributing.

The session was opened by César Cáceres Taladriz, Rector’s Delegate for the EULiST Alliance, who highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative within the framework of the European Universities Initiative. This was followed by Pablo Tomás Salvadores Alonso, Director of Internationalization, who provided a general introduction to the project and to the organizational structure of the alliance, which at URJC involves more than 50 people and representatives from the university’s ten faculties and schools.

Progress in the Work Packages

During the event, the technical leads of each Work Package (WP) presented the main results achieved so far and the activities currently underway:

  • WP1 – Management, Coordination & Strategy, presented by Juan Manuel García Camús, addressed progress in governance, sustainability and diversity in STEM, as well as challenges related to the development of a common quality and sustainability system and the legal framework of the alliance.
  • WP2 – Campus, coordinated at URJC by Bernardino Muñoz Valadés, presented key initiatives such as the development of the Digital Campus, the EULiST Course Catalogue, the Knowledge Hub and the Academic Support Centre for students and staff.
  • WP3 – Teaching and Learning, presented by Alejandro Galiano Navarro, highlighted the availability of more than 350 courses in the EULiST catalogue, the promotion of innovative teaching methodologies and the integration of artificial intelligence tools into the digital campus.
  • WP4 – Research and Innovation, coordinated at URJC by Leticia Díaz Platero, presented advances in the development of common research strategies, research group databases and collaborative activities for early-career researchers.
  • WP5 – Outreach, Engagement and Transfer, presented by Juan Manuel García Camús, focused on communication, knowledge transfer and engagement with society, including the creation of innovation hubs and the development of a joint communication strategy for the entire alliance.

Communication and international outreach

Beatriz Jiménez Sánchez then presented the evolution of the alliance’s communication model, which has moved from ten independent units to a joint PR Unit composed of representatives from all participating universities. This structure will help improve coordination and ensure greater consistency in the dissemination of EULiST activities.

The strengthening of the alliance’s communication strategy was also highlighted, including the launch of new social media channels and the development of digital tools aimed at improving the dissemination of activities, participation opportunities and project results among the university community and society.

Looking ahead to the future of EULiST

The final session was dedicated to reflecting on the future of the alliance and its upcoming milestones, including new initiatives in collaborative research, innovative education and knowledge transfer, as well as the strengthening of cooperation among the member universities.

The event concluded with a Q&A and discussion session that helped reinforce internal coordination and further consolidate URJC’s participation in this European alliance, which aims to connect society and technology through higher education, research and innovation.

Strong Student Participation at the EULiST Information Event held at NTUA

A highly successful student-led Information Event on the EULiST Alliance was recently held at NTUA, showcasing the wide range of opportunities available to students in terms of mobility, engagement, and academic development.

Event Highlights

The agenda focused on:

  • Providing a clear and accessible overview of the EULiST Alliance, its structure, and the participating countries and universities.
  • Presenting the active role of students through the EULiST Student Board, as well as their involvement in Work Packages (WPs) and Task Groups, such as Task Group 1.2 “Student Engagement”.
  • Sharing personal experiences from students who have taken part in EULiST activities.
  • Presenting short-term mobility opportunities through Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs).
  • Promoting the upcoming Student Conference 2026.
  • Showcasing the Digital Campus, including a live demonstration of the Course Catalogue and the AI tools available within the platform.

First-Hand Experiences

Particularly engaging were the short presentations delivered by students who had previously participated in BIPs and in one of the past Student Conferences. Through their testimonials, they highlighted:

  • the academic and intercultural experience they gained,
  • the opportunity to network with students and academics from across Europe,
  • the meaningful role students can play in shaping the Alliance’s activities.

Strong Interest in Active Engagement

During the discussion, many students expressed their interest in joining the local EULiST team as volunteers. Plans are already being considered for the organisation of an ΟPEN DAY to further inform and welcome new members.

The event clearly demonstrated the growing momentum around EULiST and confirmed the increasing interest of the student community in international collaboration, mobility opportunities, and active participation in shaping the European University of the future.
