ELMO-LION European PhD Course and Summer School in Battery Technology and Innovation

ELMO-LION (Educational Learning Modules on Li-ION batteries) is a new European PhD course and Summer School in battery technology and innovation, which is co-funded by EIT Raw Materials,  focused on Li-ion batteries.

The program offers 6 ECTS credits and is structured into three modules:

  1. Online Lectures: Eight two-hour digital lectures delivered by renowned battery experts, covering topics such as battery material synthesis, spectroscopic studies, first-principles modeling, diagnostics, reuse, recycling, and the battery market. The participation fee is 50€.
  2. Project Work: Students will address real-world challenges provided by industrial partners, developing solutions through literature review and original ideas. These projects are conducted remotely under mentor supervision, culminating in a written report. The participation fee is 50€.
  3. Summer School: Held in Padova, Italy, from July 28th to August 1st, 2025, this five-day event features lectures and seminars by industry and academic experts, workshops on securing startup funding, and collaborative project development with supervision from both sectors. The participation fee is 450€, which includes lectures and seminars, accommodation for 4 nights, lunches, coffee breaks, and a banquet.

Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), as part of the EULiST Alliance, is excited to announce an upcoming training activity for doctoral students organized by our International Doctoral School (EID).

This initiative represents a significant step in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among our partner institutions. Five spots have been reserved exclusively for EULiST doctoral students, creating a unique opportunity for cross-border academic development.

Interested doctoral students from EULiST partner universities are encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity. Enrollment in the activity does not automatically guarantee a spot. To participate in the selection process, it is mandatory to upload the PDF with the answers to the questionnaire that you will find at the link https://forms.office.com/e/d8TWeYB4MX   or by scanning the QR code in this application.

Contents: This activity provides keys to effectively use three principles for the internationalization of your research: publication in international journals, attendance of international meetings, international mobility. This is an interactive activity with analysis of the cases of the participants. The activity focuses on three topics:

  1. How to focus the introductions of your articles so that they are attractive to an international audience and exploration of suitable journals to submit your articles to.
  2. Strategy for attending international conferences in a productive way, which increases your network of contacts and your visibility in the scientific community.
  3. Strategy for choosing a suitable international research group to carry out a predoctoral stay and strategic planning so that the stay is productive.

Control Procedure:

To pass the activity, in addition to attendance, each attendee must develop a small internationalization plan that includes:

  • The contextualization of your thesis topic in a research problem of general interest,
  • The identification of international scientific journals in which you will try to publish your research,
  • The identification of prestigious international conferences in which you can present your research and the development of a plan with objectives to achieve in case of attendance and,
  • The identification of a prestigious international research group in which consider making a stay and elaboration of a plan with objectives to develop during that stay.

This specialized education program aims to help PhD students tackle complex issues of Social License to Operate (SLO).

  1. Online Sessions: February 3-7, 2025
    • Comprehensive coverage of basic SLO principles from legal, societal, ethical, and environmental perspectives.

The Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), as a partner of EULiST invites two members of the EULiST Alliance per university to participate in 16 hours on-line “Preparing R&D + i Projects Horizon Europe” course.

Why take this course?

Taking a course in writing innovation and research projects for Horizon Europe is crucial for those who want to exploit the potential of this new framework programme, which has a budget of €97.6 billion. With Horizon Europe, the European Union has introduced important changes compared to Horizon 2020, such as new pillars, sub-programmes and quality criteria aimed at increasing the impact of R&D&I projects at European and international level. This course will enable participants to learn about these changes and draw on the lessons of the previous programme, helping them to understand how to get involved in key processes such as consultations, missions and partnerships.

In addition, the training provided in this course will help to develop the skills and competences needed to prepare competitive proposals adapted to the new Horizon Europe guidelines. Participants will learn how to identify impacts, update the scientific and industrial state of the art and apply the new European criteria in market-oriented projects. This is essential in such a competitive context, where mastering the technical and strategic aspects can be decisive for success in obtaining funding and international cooperation in research and innovation.

In this way, the course objectives will be covered:

  • You will know the pillars, subprograms and actions of Horizon Europe.
  • You will become familiar with its new entities and financing instruments.
  • You will develop a set of skills and capacities that will allow you to explore new opportunities and optimize your financing strategy for R+D + i 2021-2027.
  • You will discover and understand the new Horizon Europe quality criteria, its strategic priorities and the success factors for writing and submitting competitive proposals.
  • You will become familiar with new terms, tools and technicalities Horizon Europe.

The Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), as a partner of EULiST invites two members of the EULiST Alliance per university to participate in the three-day (8 hours) online course “Horizon Europe Programme, Management and Reporting: A Practical Overview”.

It is important to know about the Horizon Europe programme because this initiative aims to strengthen the EU’s scientific and technological base, address key priorities such as the environmental and digital transitions, contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and boost competitiveness with a budget of €95.5 billion. Horizon Europe is based on three pillars Excellent Science, supporting scientific leadership through high quality projects and researcher mobility; Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness, funding innovation in areas such as health, climate and energy; and Innovative Europe, driving breakthrough innovation and creating new market opportunities through the European Innovation Council.

The objectives of this course are:

  • Familiarize participants with Horizon Europe funding opportunities and how to select the most appropriate sub-programmes for their R&D&I projects.
  • Provide tools to interpret Work Programs and Topics, optimising their funding strategy and approach to ideas according to the type of action of the program.
  • Develop key skills to explore opportunities using the new terms, tools and technical aspects of Horizon Europe.

The Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) as a partner of EULiST invites two members of the EULiST Alliance per university to participate in the three-day (16 hours) online PMI course. This training is of great interest to project managers as PMBOK stands for Project Management Body of Knowledge and is a process-based project management methodology (actually a framework, but more on that later) developed by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is a collection of project management processes, best practices, terminologies, guidelines and tools that are accepted as standard within project management and is the most popular certification.

The course consists of 30% theory, explaining the principles, processes, best practices, tools and techniques. The remaining 70% will be practical, applied to real projects by teams of 3 or 4 participants. In this way, the course objectives will be covered:

  • Master basic project management skills, concepts and techniques.
  • Link project goals and objectives to clear and compelling stakeholder needs.
  • Apply different planning methods (schedules, dashboards, curves, …).
  • Set realistic and measurable objectives and ensure positive results.
  • Define and estimate project deliverables or MVPs, costs and schedules using simple and proven participative techniques.
  • Set up a reliable project monitoring and tracking system.
