EULiST BIP “Notte bianca delle culture 2026” (White night of cultures 2026)

26/03/2026 Date: April - June 2026

The University of L’Aquila, in cooperation with Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), Jönköping University (JU) and National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is organizing a EULiST BIP called “Notte bianca delle culture 2026″ (White night of cultures 2026), in the framework of the “L’AQUILA, ITALIAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2026” event.

The programme will take place with online sessions (12 hours between May 11th and 30th 2026), and in-person activities from June 2nd to June 7th 2026, in L’Aquila.

Type of participants/Target group: 1°, 2°, 3° cycle students, in the areas of STEM, Human Sciences, and Sport Sciences.

Objectives and description: The program focuses on the intersection between global citizenship, sustainability, and intercultural dialogue. The central theme is the transformation of academic knowledge (scientific and humanistic) into a tool for social cohesion. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the project explores how understanding cultural differences and adopting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can foster a shared European identity. The program uses the city of L’Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture for the year 2026, as an open-air laboratory for the integration of academic research and the local area.

Three main relevant areas are involved: scientific, humanistic, and sporting, thus involving three different departments of the University of L’Aquila: Human Sciences, Engineering and Information Sciences, and Mathematics and Applied Clinical and Biotechnological Sciences.

The training program aims to develop cross-cutting skills through three main phases:

  1. Virtual phase (preparatory): online meetings dedicated to the transfer of theoretical knowledge on global citizenship and intercultural approach. Students begin to collaborate in international teams to define the content of their research.
  1. Physical mobility phase (implementation): 5-days in L’Aquila focused on “Public Engagement.” Activities include science communication and storytelling sessions, team building activities, visits to local cultural heritage sites, and urban trekking.

EULiST Art Lunch – A digital lecture for the lunch break

23/03/2026 Date: April - May 2026

Pop Art in Europe

Throughout art history, there have always been sensational artistic movements that have provoked and changed art and society with their new approaches. Pop Art is one such artistic movement. Originating in New York in the 1950s and early 1960s and soon establishing itself in London, pop art became well known and influential through exhibitions in major museums throughout Europe. The provocation in Pop Art stemmed from a reversal of values within the field of education: everyday life was placed at the centre, mass media was incorporated, advertising was upgraded; in short, everything that had not previously been considered high art was now declared to be at its core.

In reporting on Pop Art, artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein take centre stage, while artists in the various European countries and the respective national interpretations of what is essentially an international style are less well known. The European alliance EULiST, comprising universities in Sweden and Finland, France and Germany, Spain, Austria, Slovakia and Czechia, as well as Italy and Greece, offers the opportunity to explore how Pop Art was implemented in these countries and what special features can be observed there.
Every week at lunchtime, Pop Art in Europe is discussed comparatively in several of the EULiST countries, with each session being self-contained. Art Lunch places particular emphasis on methodological approaches to art and artistic movements such as Pop Art. Here, the reversal of values was challenging for art history. How should one react to such provocations?
Let yourself be surprised by the selection and sophistication of historical and contemporary works of art and the methodology of their research.
