EULiST Blended Intensive Program: «Advances in Sustainable Building Energy Technologies and Smart Decarbonisation»

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is organizing this program in cooperation with Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), TU Wien (TUW), Brno University of Technology (BUT), Jönköping University (JU), Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU), University L’Aquila (UnivAQ), Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) and Technical University Munich (TUM).

Participating academics and teaching staff members will share their expertise on sustainable building energy technologies, advanced heating and cooling systems, building energy simulation, smart digital methods, and decarbonization strategies. The virtual sessions prepare students for the practical onsite workshops, technical visits, and group projects.

Date-Place

  • Interactive online teaching: Mondays, 28 September, 5 October, and 12 October 2026 (14:00 – 17:00 CEST)
  • On-site teaching: 16 – 24 October 2026, Athens – Greece (NTUA)
  • Project presentations: 24 October 2026

The virtual component ensures that all participants share a common background before arriving in Athens. It introduces core concepts in energy performance, decarbonisation, HVAC technologies and sustainable building systems, and prepares students for the practical onsite workshops, technical visits and DesignBuilder-based group project. The virtual sessions therefore function as the conceptual foundation of the BIP and support the integration of online learning with the intensive face-to-face programme.

Target Audience Undergraduate students (after the 2nd year of studies) and postgraduate/Master level students. The program is particularly relevant for students in fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Design, and related STEM disciplines.

Objectives and description This course address the role of buildings and HVAC systems in energy consumption and emissions, energy performance indicators, heat pump technologies,  systems, natural refrigerants, passive strategies, nZEB principles, LEED-certified buildings, and AI applications in building energy systems.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Gain practical skills in building energy modelling using DesignBuilder.
  • Evaluate sustainable heating, cooling, and low-GWP strategies.
  • Develop smart, sustainable, and low-carbon building solutions.
  • Apply ASHRAE standards, nZEB concepts, and AI techniques in building energy systems.

Number of ECTS: 4 ECTS 

Language of instruction: English (minimum B1 level required)

  • Undergraduate (after 2nd year) or postgraduate student
  • Certificate of studies (GPA and field of study will be considered)
  • English language proficiency (at least B1 level)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Motivation letter

Application, deadline and nomination procedure Interested students should submit their application to their home university’s Erasmus office within the defined application period (deadline for applications: August 27, 2026). Selections will be carried out by the students’ home institutions.

  • Financial support: Participating students will receive mobility funding from their sending universities, with potential additional support for green travel.
