EULiST BIP “Mathematical Modelling for natural disasters”
The Department of Information Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics of the University of L’Aquila is organizing the BIP “Mathematical Modelling for natural disasters”, in cooperation with National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
The programme will take place with online sessions in the week 15 – 19 of June 2026, and in-person activities from July 6 to July 10, 2026, in L’Aquila.
Type of participants/Target group: 1°, 2°, 3° cycle students, in the areas of Partial differential equations, Mathematical modelling, High-Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence.
Objectives and description: The program will revolve around applied mathematics viewed as an interdisciplinary area at the interface with engineering, physics, geology with this main subject: Modelling Natural Disasters based on the study of stochastic and elastodynamics equations for earthquake dynamics , mathematical models for natural disasters (fire, landslides, climate changes etc.) and on the study of reaction-diffusion-aggregation equations and conservation laws. Suitable Artificial Intelligence and High Performance Computing techniques will be introduced in the BIP. Students selected for the program will acquire skills in: mathematical modeling for natural disasters, numerical simulation and data analysis using parallel computing and artificial intelligence techniques.
Number of ECTS: 3
Language of instruction: English, B2 level requested.
Application, deadline and nomination procedure:
Interested students should contact their university’s Erasmus office and EULiST local coordinator for more institution-specific information such as different application deadlines due to internal procedures. The selections will be carried out by the students’ home institutions.
